Clinical Significance of Memory and Hysteresis in Voltage-Gated Ion Channels
An ever-growing body of evidence has shown that voltage-gated ion channels are likely molecular systems that display hysteresis in their activity. Intertwined with memory, hysteretic pathways are present in essential physiological processes and hold the potential to impact clinical care. In this presentation, the definition of memory and hysteresis will be explained, analyzed, and applied to numerous examples. The goal of the presentation is to shed light on the importance and future significance of these hysteretic pathways.
